been playing tug o' war with my am. bulldog and he loves it.  gets a good workout (panting and very tired afterwards), and completely respects release/give/drop commands.  unfortunately, I get completely winded as well and have been thinking of putting up a hang time rope, or whatever you call it.

for those who don't know what that is, it's a chew rope, attached to a garage door spring, which is suspended from a strong treebranch.  the bottom of the rope hangs above the dog's head and the idea is to let him get all the jawing he wants and let him go as long as he wants until he's done.

now i don't really have a good branch to hang this contraption on and was wondering if anyone had any good, and/or simple, ideas of rigging one of these up?  i was thinking of maybe rigging up some metal posts with a top bar to let it hang from, like an squarish, upside-down U.  that seems like the most obvious way, just wondering if there might be an easier solution.

all and/or any advice is appreciated, including any negative reasons why one shouldn't do this.  i've seen it recommended in a couple of books/magazines so far, so i'm assuming it's a somewhat endorsed activity and doesn't have much drawback.

thoughts?

It's called a "Spring Pole".

It does have some negative connotations but only because they can be used as evidence of dog fighting. Cops call it "paraphernalia" when it is combined with multiple dogs, treadmills, breeding stands, chain spaces, etc......

APBT Love it though. Your AB prolly would too.

Very simple concept. Hang a hide or something durable from a spring and let 'em hang!

I have a bungie hooked to a thick play rope that my pit chases around. I have also hooked it to a long pole and flipped around kinda like fishin' and it keeps him winded while I just stand there Wink

I sometimes throw the bungie over a tree branch and hold on to one end and let Boo jump for it and stuff.

Yeah, that "upside down U" thing would work fine. Two 4x4 wood beams cemented a few feet in the ground and a good strong one going across the top. Make sure to put braces up too. Screws, no nails, and the top beam should be strong enough you'd be comfortable hanging from it. Make sure it is where his back two feet will be on the ground while he's using it. You don't want to leave him alone with it for risk of injury and it is likely if he can use it as much as he wants, he'll tire from it. Springpole, flirtpole, ect. Tease him with it some so he doesn't loose intrest. Maybe "tease" is the wrong word. It's just best not to let him have it whenever he wants. For a dog the size of an AmBull, you may want to double up on those springs.

Oh, one more thing, make sure there is never any metal near his mouth. Smiley
