Anyone use their dogs for hunting? If so I would like to hear about it Smiley

I am very interested in hunting with dogs. I do believe I have someone that is willing to train me how to hunt with dogs as well as train my dogs to hunt.

Petrie was being trained to be a "hogdog" by our son.  She is now a Princess instead.  LOL.  She is also a handful.  She came ot live with us when she was 5 months and she is now over a year and she is NOT a hogdog but does at times think Kody our other dog is a hog and if she can't bring him down by the collar she will go after his legs when they are rough-housing.  When she was about 6-7 months old she would drag Kody (100#) around the floor and he would lay there a let her.  Now that she is over a year he is less tolerant of such behavior.

My daughter is interested in getting a hound and training it. I am just getting started with training Boo my OEB/Pit mix. I think he will do well but only time will tell.

In the hunting Rules in Idaho you are not allowed to use dogs for any big game except bear and cougar. I wonder if that apples to tracking wounded animals as well. It just states that dogs are not allowed.

Well I am hoping to hear some great stories.

here in missouri you are not allowed to hunt deer with dogs but you are allowed to track them just keep them on a leash.apbt are terriers  that means turf in french most terriers were breed to track or hunt and kill vermin.so apbt do have the sniffer for hunting that is 4 sure.o ya jade is 12 for 12 in finding wounded deer.she is getting old she is 9 years but she still gets excited when we go to the woods.we got 7 hogs thursday night useing 2 apbt and 2 apbt mixes.the mixes are bay dogs the other are catch dogs.

Shawn,

What size game does your state concider Hogs? I tend to lean towards large but maybe you could get by, many states don't concider them even a game animal but a varmit or pest animal where other rules apply to hunting them if any. APBT do great on Bear and Cougars. I will eat a bear but cougars are worthless for the freezer to feed the family. Well I wont eat them anyway.
It is best to have a few bay dogs though so you know where what ever game is that your catch type dogs have the game down. The APBT is often very quiet once it has what ever game taken down. They focus on keeping said game down. Barking or such isn't on the priority list. It is best to train as a apprentice with another hunter in this style of hunting as the knowledge you must obtain is quite extensive.

We don't have hogs... The only hog hunting in the state is up north on someones private property and you can pay something like $400.00 to hunt a hog he has planted there.....

Here some farmers will pay you to get rid of the dang things. $400 you could drive down here put your camper out on the property and hunt till you were sick of it and drive home and still have $300 left. hunting tame animals is just plain silly. Be like boxing with a blind person. I like the element that the animal can kill us too. Makes it more fun.

For the record, I suggested you do just that before you started moving. Tongue
