Happy holidays everyone- hope that no one got stuck in nasty weather.  New Years Whim (too erratic for resolutions) is to post more disease/condition facts on the medical thread- any requests?

This isn't a disease/condition, but what kind of treats can I give the dog who is allergic to everything. He's eating food given to him by the vet and if he gets anything else he gets all itchy and has ear infections. Any suggestions of hypoallergenic food?

depends what he's allergic to... 80% of food allergies in dogs are to beef and dairy- so if you pick a treat with no beef, lamb, venison or dairy products, you've got a fair chance it'll be ok.  Personally my allergic dog does great with peanut butter treats.

I'll have to try the peanut butter treats. I just feel so bad as my other dog gets little beef jerky treats and rawhide chews on occasion and all Scetti can have is his dog food. Just doesn't quite seem fair... although, I know it probably bothers me more than it bothers him.

How is broccoli for him? My husband gave him a piece the other day which he seemed to enjoy.

We haven't tested him to see what he's allergic to as my vet told me I probably didn't want to know. He said he's probably allergic to literally everything and that the only way I'd be able to keep him from having outbreaks is to give him his dog food only. He wouldn't even tell me what I could try to give him for treats. How much would testing him be?

Broccoli is fine. Testing runs a couple hundred dollars for the cheap way (blood test).  The gold standard is skin testing- which will cost upwards of $1000, but gives you the most accuate results.
Like I said- I'm playing the odds that he's allergic to beef, but he could be allergic to anything, and he's almost certainly allergic to more than one thing.  Might do a writeup on allergies.

Yikes....

I may try the PB and see if he has any adverse reactions to it.... extra itchiness. I don't intend on feeding it to him everynight, but it seems it would be a nice alternative to dog food all the time.

Not sure my hubby is going to go for the skin test, although I might be able to talk him into the blood test. We'll see, I guess.

Thanks for the info. A full post on allergies itself would be awesome!
